The Indian Pancreatitis Study is a
multicenter project. The study was conceived in December 2004,
after a meeting held at the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences.
The objectives are to understand the etiopathogenesis, natural
history, clinical features, and complications, as well as to study
the various therapeutic modalities in the management of chronic
pancreatitis (CP) as well as pancreatic diabetes. The Indian
Pancreatitis Study group comprises of gastroenterologists,
endocrinologists, diabetologists GI surgeons as well as basic
research workers.
The National Coordinator of the
Project is Prof V Balakrishnan of the Amrita Institute of Medical
Sciences, Cochin. The study group consists of a core committee
formed during the initial meeting in 2004, and we invite all
Indian health professionals who regularly treat subjects with CP
or pancreatic diabetes to join the study. At the coordinating
center in the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, we have a
local committee of institutional coordinators to look after the
day-to-day conduct of the project.
The first phase of the study will
involve the collection of data regarding the baseline
characteristics of patients with CP and pancreatic diabetes. This
data is to be entered directly via a web-based registry. The
second phase of the study will be a prospective study, which is
envisioned as a comprehensive study with sub-studies evaluating
all aspects of CP and pancreatic diabetes. To our knowledge this
is the first study using an online data entry to be completely
designed and created In India.
The coordinating center of the study
is at the Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, and we invite any
questions regarding the study to our research officer at
